Name: Entropic Perceptions Artist Reception
Date: May 7, 2015
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT
Event Description:
701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia, S.C., announces Entropic Perceptions by Shannon Rae Lindsey which will open Thursday, May 7, 2015, with an artist reception, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., and run through June 21. Admission for the artist reception catered by Linda Phillips is free for members and a $5 donation is suggested for non-members. As winner of the 701 CCA Prize 2014, which was the second installment of the biennial event, Lindsey received among other things, a residency at 701 CCA and a solo exhibition at the center. In this exhibition, Lindsey uses the Center's gallery to create a large-scale installation that responds to, and literally transforms, the traditional architecture of the space. Using man-made commercial construction materials, she has built pieces throughout the installation in such a way that they challenge our pre-conceived notions of beauty, function, and public space. The large forms, placed throughout the gallery, not only redefine their surrounding environment, but also speak to the radical change the artist has effected in the appearance of their materials. She has given the nondescript raw materials of the builder and architect a way to take on a mysterious life of their own. Lindsey (b. 1985) received her MFA from the University of South Carolina in Columbia and in 2008 earned a BFA from the University of South Florida. She teaches art as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina. Her work has been included in some 20 exhibitions in Florida and South Carolina. Lindsey is an interdisciplinary artist who explores drawing, painting, sculpture and installation with unconventional materials and processes.
